If you run Dynamics GP, the end date is set. Microsoft stops product updates, tax and regulatory updates and technical support on December 31, 2029, and new customers haven’t been able to license GP since April 1, 2026.
That leaves two Dynamics 365 destinations. Microsoft’s default answer is Business Central, and for many GP customers it’s the right one. Companies that have outgrown GP, especially those with many companies, international entities or a complex supply chain, often land on Dynamics 365 Finance & Supply Chain Management instead. A Dynamics GP to Dynamics 365 migration looks very different depending on which you choose.

Dynamics GP to Dynamics 365 Migration: The Short Answer
- Know your dates. Support, including tax updates, ends December 31, 2029, and security updates continue, if needed, until April 30, 2031.
- Choose the destination first. Business Central is Microsoft’s ERP for small and midsize businesses. Finance & Supply Chain Management is built for larger, multi-entity and international companies.
- GP to Business Central has a Microsoft cloud migration tool. GP to Finance & Supply Chain Management doesn’t, so it’s a data migration project.
- Either way, decide how much history to bring, clean your vendors and customers in GP, and test with real GP data from the first round.

Dynamics GP End of Support: The Dates That Matter
| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| April 1, 2026 | Last day new customers could license GP subscriptions |
| December 31, 2029 | Product enhancements, tax and regulatory updates and technical support end |
| April 30, 2031 | Security updates, if needed, end. Service plan coverage ends and subscription licenses can no longer be renewed. |
Microsoft moved the support end date from September 30, 2029 to December 31, 2029 so GP customers can finish a full year of payroll and tax. Older GP versions under the fixed lifecycle have their own dates: extended support for GP 2018 R2 ends January 11, 2028, and installing a current tax update or hotfix moves it onto the modern policy.
Business Central or Finance and Supply Chain Management?
Microsoft encourages GP customers to move to Business Central, and its ERP pages point small and midsize businesses to Business Central. Many GP customers also qualify for promotional pricing on Business Central, which partners can explain.
Finance & Supply Chain Management is built for larger organizations. Microsoft cites compliance in 57 countries and regions and 67 languages. GP customers tend to choose it when they’ve outgrown GP in a way Business Central wouldn’t fix:
- Many legal entities, with intercompany activity and a consolidation every month
- Operations in several countries, each with its own tax and reporting rules
- A complex supply chain, manufacturing or warehousing
- Growth plans, such as acquisitions, that will multiply the number of companies
We compare the two products in more depth in Business Central vs. Dynamics 365 F&SCM. NAV customers face the same choice, which we cover in Dynamics NAV to Dynamics 365 migration.

Migrating Dynamics GP to Business Central
Microsoft provides a cloud migration tool for GP to Business Central online. It runs on Azure Data Factory pipelines, and GP stays your live system until the migration is complete, so you can test in a sandbox first. It moves:
- Setup data such as payment terms and shipping methods
- Master data such as accounts, customers, vendors and items
- Open receivables and payables at their remaining amounts, and open purchase orders
- General ledger history as period summaries, for as many years back as you choose
- The GP Historical Snapshot, which copies detailed GP history into separate tables you can look up
Your account structure changes on the way in. The main GP segment becomes the account number, and the other segments become dimensions.
There are limits. The source has to be GP 2015 or later on SQL Server 2016 SP1 or later, and the assisted setup is supported in the US, Canada, the UK and Australia. Users and permissions don’t come across, and customizations only migrate if you build extensions for them.
Migrating Dynamics GP to Finance and Supply Chain Management
There’s no Microsoft migration tool for GP to Finance & Supply Chain Management. Microsoft’s migration guidance names Business Central as the destination for GP, and on the Finance side its implementation guide points to the data management framework as the main tool for loading data. A move from GP to Finance and Supply Chain is a reimplementation with a data migration.
That is more work up front. It’s also a chance to fix what GP has made awkward for years.
Map GP Segments to Main Accounts and Financial Dimensions
GP account segments usually become a main account plus financial dimensions such as department or cost center. Finance and Supply Chain can require a dimension value before a transaction posts, which GP never asked for, so your mapping needs rules for where each value comes from. Microsoft also warns against using dimensions for values that aren’t reused, such as document numbers, because they slow down year-end close, revaluation and consolidation.
Turn GP Companies Into Legal Entities
Many GP customers run a separate company database for each entity. In Finance and Supply Chain they become legal entities in one environment. The standard data management tools import into one legal entity per run, so eight data types across ten companies means 80 imports. That multiplication is why AMCS loads every company from one file. We explain the math in data management framework vs. AMCS.
Decide How Much History to Bring
Microsoft’s guidance is to migrate open transactions and balances and summarize completed history rather than migrating it in detail. Most implementations bring a time frame set by audit and tax requirements, such as three or five years of balances, and keep GP or an archive for older lookups.

Clean Your GP Data Before Either Migration
Whichever destination you choose, clean in GP before you extract. A GP system that has run for 15 years collects vendors you haven’t paid in a decade, the same customer under three spellings and items nobody stocks anymore. Flag what you won’t migrate in GP itself, so it never enters the process, and pick one correct version of each duplicate.

Leave GP on Your Schedule, Not Microsoft’s
Avantiico supports Dynamics GP customers both ways: keeping GP running until you’re ready, and moving to Dynamics 365 when you are. For companies that have outgrown GP, we migrate to Finance & Supply Chain Management with AMCS, so a ten-company migration doesn’t take ten times the effort.
